Schwanen”。

During their visit to the Swabian Alb, Gitta and Peter Plotnicki stumbled upon a hidden gem: Rudolf Loder, one of the last remaining textile manufacturers in the area.

To their astonishment, Loder unveiled a collection of 32 pristine loopwheelers dating back to the late 1800s and 1960s. These machines, covered in layers of dust, held immense potential for Gitta and Peter's vision of reviving the art of crafting traditional circular knitwear.

Loder, a passionate "textilist" at heart, was captivated by the Plotnickis' idea. Together, the three embarked on the journey to breathe new life into these ancient machines.

A Natural Limitation

As the saying goes, "Good things take time." This mantra rings true for their ambitious project of reviving the brand, even to this day as they produce their exquisite creations under the name "GOOD ORIGINALS."

With a limited collection of 32 loopwheelers, each with its unique size and capacity, the production process is naturally constrained. Moreover, crafting a single T-shirt through loopwheeling takes approximately twenty times longer than on modern machines. Yet, it is precisely this meticulous craftsmanship that makes their fabrics truly exceptional and unparalleled in today's world.

While the scarcity of their creations may test one's patience, the palpable and visible uniqueness of each piece makes it worth the wait. There is nothing quite like it.

Preserving Heritage

The headquarters of their endeavor reside in Berlin, a city that holds a special place in the hearts of Peter and Gitta Plotnicki. While the couple meticulously develops their inaugural collection and devises a distribution strategy, Rudolf Loder tirelessly tinkers with his vintage machines in Albstadt.

A year-long endeavor was dedicated to restoring these intricate mechanical marvels. However, finding skilled individuals capable of operating these antiquated machines remains an ongoing challenge.

Their project began to stir up excitement within the Swabian Alb, particularly captivating the interest of Balthasar Merz's descendants. Enthralled by the Plotnickis' entrepreneurial vision, they generously offered the couple the revered brand name "Merz b. Schwanen."

Overwhelmed with joy, Gitta and Peter embraced this unexpected gift. Suddenly, they found themselves holding more than a century's worth of company history in their hands. The support and motivation they received from this alliance were beyond their wildest dreams.

In January 2011, just in time for the company's anniversary, Merz b. Schwanen proudly unveiled its debut collection at the renowned international fashion fair, "Bread and Butter," held in Berlin. The fusion of authentic worker's garments from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s with modern designs proved to be an extraordinary success.
